We've all heard that you learn more from failure than you do from success. Which means that all those hours spent watching crappy movies wasn't a waste of your precious and ever-dwindling life span; it was an education! And Better Living Through Bad Movies can show you how to extract the profound, life-affirming lessons from films like Battlefield Earth, Coyote Ugly, and Indecent Proposal.

In over 50 hilarious reviews, the authors show how you can use the worst movies ever made to improve your sex life (it involves cardboard cutouts and clog dancing), apocalypse-proof your home (using the following materials John Travolta, Kevin Costner, Sylvester Stallone, and more Kevin Costner), and win omnipotence and a Happy Meal by solving Satan's Junior Jumble. You will also discover how to forge a love that will last a lifetime (by dating the moribund), use films like Batman and Robin and Star Wars The Phantom Menace as grief counseling, and conquer the world using common fruit bats and dry cleaning fluid. And, most important of all, you'll learn Hollywood's Ultimate Secret why Beaches and Armageddon are actually the exact same movie.

I love bad movies, and have quite a few books on the subject. This is by far one of the
best because it made me laugh. The sense of humor of the 2 authors seems to be very
much like mine. An added bonus is that there were a couple movies in here that I'd never
heard of, which is rare.
They take the approach of giving a more in-depth review of fewer movies, rather than
capsule reviews of a greater number of them. I prefer this way.
I've already read this book twice, and haven't really had it that long.
I really, really would like them to write another. There's plenty of movies out there.

Hilarious
Gets heavy-handed with the political snark. I would have given it 5 stars if he had taken a jab or two at the left - hey, there is plenty to make fun of on both sides of the aisle, and the constant harassment towards the right got a bit tiresome after a bit. That said, this was a really funny book and overall I enjoyed it very much.
Nurture your sense of humor - buy this book! Bad movies have never been funnier than they are here. Between reading the reviews and watching the movies, this is a high impact, low cost barrel o' fun.

What I personally love about the book is the way the authors just seem to fall over the cliff into absurdity every so often. It's the perfect metaphor, and exquisitely amusing.
Do you savor world class snark, or get a sick thrill out of seeing cinematic turkeys grandiose ("The Phantom Menace") and obscure ("The Mesa of Lost Women") and actors whose egos far exceed their ability mercilessly mocked? Want to know what the Five Stages of Bad Sequels are? Would you like to be amazed as the authors prove with precise, geometric logic that "Beaches" and "Armageddon" are in actuality the same movie? If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, then there's no reason to wait one minute longer buy this book.
I made that mistake several times. Well, it was worth the near-death experience of choking on my corn chips while laughing hysterically. It's great to finally have so many bad movie reviews together in one convenient package. Even though I actually liked some of the movies in this book, I'm willing to laugh at them too. All in all, though, I think the lesson to be carried away from this book is that if the authors had gone to Lulu instead of iuniverse, they could be selling it for $10 instead of nearly $20.
Put this on the shelf next to the Pauline Kael. Not that Scott writes like Pauline, I just think that would be a good place for it . . .
Great read. Scott Clevenger has written a very funny look at some of the worst movies ever. He is a true public servant.
There is a hardcore subculture of people that just love, LOVE crappy movies and the people that make fun of them. I am a member of that subculture and I'm betting that if you're reading this review, you are too. We all know the big boys - MST3K (and their various spinoffs the Film Crew and Rifftrax). But there are a lot of talented amateurs out there, writing blogs and Facebook posts and making their family laugh their butts off. And then there is the inbetween - people who are talented, professional writers who also happen to love this crap. Scott and Sheri are, as a team, part of this group. They are wicked smart, mercilessly funny, and have a great sense of how movies that smell of failure can still tell us something about our culture. The brilliance of this book is that they manage to include both snark (about the movie itself and it's awfulness) and satire (in how they suggest we apply the horrible lessons of the movies to our lives) in equal measures. Both of the authors are unabashed liberals and take obvious pride in not-so-subtly comparing conservatives or conservative ideals to what we see in bad movies. If you're the kind of person that thinks our culture is slowly swirling down the drain (and not because they took Jesus out of the schools) but still revels in the dreck it produces, this is THE book for you!
