This 40 year-old classic deserves to be read, to see how much as changed, and how much hasn’t. While gay men in the USA no longer have to fear being arrested for simply being gay, the sports world is still full of homophobia and discrimination. The story of “The Front Runner” is told by Harlan Brown, a ‘late bloomer’ who served in the marines, got married and had children before finally admitting his attraction to men. He is forced to resign his position as track coach at a prestigious university after unfounded accusations of making advances on one of his students, and is only beginning to put his life back together at a new school when the story begins.
Harlan’s life is in for big changes when three young runners show up in his office one winter day. Billy, Vince and Jacques are world class athletes with Olympic hopes that have been kicked off the team at the University of Oregon just for being gay. Harlan somewhat reluctantly agrees to take them on and begins the tough job of training them.
The job gets even tougher when Harlan finds himself ever more attracted to Billy, yet tries to abide by his rule of never getting involved with his athletes, even though it appears Billy reciprocates the feelings. The mutual attraction proves hard to resist and a relationship develops, but keeping it from the press and track authorities proves impossible.
“The Front Runner” is a story that rings amazingly true. You may find at times that you have to remind yourself that this is a fictional story and not an autobiography. The events sound so much like they could have happened that it’s easy to believe they did.
While the main theme of homosexuality in sports is what makes this book such a classic, there are many other interesting observations which you may find quite prescient in a book first published in 1974. Even before the advent of social media, the characters raise the question of the right for public figures such as athletes to have a private life. Then there is the observation of one of the characters on the reaction to the gunning down of one of the other characters:
The world was in its usual state of futile guilt. We have all become so accustomed to violence that the hand-wringing was now just a social ritual.
I was reading this passage within a couple of days of the latest mass shootings in San Bernadino. Of all the things that have changed in the 40 years since this book was published, it’s very sad to think this is one thing that hasn’t.

The Front Runner The Front Runner saga Book 1 edition by Patricia Nell Warren Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I bought both the version and matching audio version of this book and I'm so glad I did. The narrator did a fantastic job and enhanced the story 10 fold...but it just made it all the more heartbreaking. I remember reading this book many years ago and it affected me tremendously. I've always been a very empathetic person but this really touched a nerve - I'm always for the underdog. Never have two main characters (not to mention the rest of the characters) been so real to me. Never have I cried so much over a book and what an impact the ending had for me. While it was devastating there was also the gentle and uplifting reminder that life goes on and the best is yet to be. I also loved the banter between the two main characters. This is one of those books everyone should read and despite the ache it caused to my heart it was well worth it - I will never forget this book, the author, its message of love and tolerance. Beautiful story.
The first time I read this book was in High School back in the Philippines. My mother who loves to read a lot, got the book from her sister who lives in Hawaii. As a gay teenager living in the Philippines at that time, I have no idea what's gay life in America. My Mother was keeping this book away from me until one day she forgot to hide it. I was intrigue by the cover at first, and I ended up staying the whole day in my room until I finished reading it,. That week I remember crying every time the death of Billy flashed back into my imagination. This book helps me in coming out of age as a gay teenager. When I moved to New York City in 1989, adopting to the gay culture in New York city is an easy process because of this book. The fist thing I did when I went to the East Village is to find a gay bookstore that sells this novel. Since then, I read this book multiple times and almost all books written by Ms. Warren. I hope Harlan's Race and Billy's Boy is also available in soon. This book should always be in the night stand table or kindle of every gay man.
This is an extraordinary story written by Patricia Nell Warren, open Lesbian and Civil Rights Activist. Her novel is very moving, touching, with bold descriptions. It deals with the lack of equality rights back in the early 1970s and how restrictive and politically controlled the athletic organizations were at that time. In this story, Harlan Brown is an athletic coach at Prescott College, in New York. On December 10, 1974, he meets 22-year-old Billy Sive, a track runner kicked off the Oregon University team along with two others because of being gay and they also had lost their scholarships. He and his two friends, in the winter, hitchhike from Oregon to New York state to join the field and track team at Prescott College. Harlan himself is gay, but has always tried to not let it be known since his dismissal as coach from Penn State a couple years back. The three boys are top runners and Harlan may have another chance to have a great team. This story is the reflection of many who are trapped skeletons in the closet of American athletics. Harlan believes these boys have Olympic capabilities, especially Billy as a distant runner. He pushes Billy the hardest to get him into a positive workout schedule. But Billy becomes arrogant and the tension between them grows till finally they confront each other about their feelings. This story is very revealing of the challenges they both meet and which they overcome. The characters are very compelling, the story is finely honed, reflecting the skills of this author. It's a story I'm impressed with as it is written by a women. I consider her a front runner herself and hope all our dreams come to fulfillment with equal rights for all in our nation. Highly recommend.
