I was with her twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for the last ten months of her life. The conversations we had were priceless. The promises I made to her I am still fulfilling. Dawn definitely made me a stronger person. She taught me so many things about life, about myself, but also about others. After she was diagnosed, Dawn saw things as they were and not as she wished them to be, and slowly but surely she began putting things in order. Yes, this cancer is going to end my life here on earth several years sooner than if I didn't have it. Though it won't take away what I have. I have a loving father and best friend. I have Cathy, my wonderful mother by marriage. I have my mother and Kristie who I love so very much. I have the two most beautiful children in the world in Tyler and Jordan. I have peace with God and myself. I also have something that is so important to me I have love from all those I just mentioned. They love me. So you see, cancer didn't win. It can never take what I have. Please understand that I haven't given up on a miracle nor have I given up on life here on earth. I won't live my life waiting on a miracle. I'm going to live my life as if I don't need a miracle. I won't live my life in fear of death. I'm going to live my life as if I have nothing to fear. Yes, I will do whatever it takes to live. I'm going to do my best to do what it takes to be happy not depressed. So yes, I hate that I have cancer, although I love my life and those who are in it and make it what it is.

Daddy's Promise is a straight from the heart, nothing held back, story of Brendan Hoffman's promises given to his daughter Dawn as she fought the good fight against cancer at the oh so young age of 28. I never met Dawn, but I went to high school with her dad, Brendan, and am proud to call him my good friend 40 years later. When Brendan came home from FL to OH for our all class reunion two years ago, we talked of his promises to Dawn and how her push for him to join Facebook, attend class reunions, and write down their experiences through her illness had helped him survive her passing. I knew much of what transpired during those 10 months of her illness, but not until I read this book did I truly understand the depth of love that Brendan and Dawn had for each other, as well as the love they shared with Dawn's sister Kristie Lynn and Brendan's wife Cathy.

Yes, I cried at the circumstances that cancer forced upon Dawn's family, but even more than grief and sadness, this book made me feel the love. I wish everyone had a family with this much love and devotion. I don't have any children, so have never had the privilege of feeling the love of a parent for a child. Sadly, I don't think every parent has the degree of love that the Hoffman family shares, nor would everyone be there in so many ways for their child. I respect Brendan so very much.

Daddy's Promise tells a lot of details of how Hospice works. I know that every Hospice is a little different, but for anyone with a friend or loved one with a terminal illness, this book walks you through the experience.

Brendan's feelings, his sense of loss, his voyage through life without Dawn.... all are here for us to share. Personally, reading this book made me think back 12 years to the illness and death of my parents to cancer. I wish that I'd done for them even a fraction of what Brendan and Cathy did for Dawn. Reading this book has made me more aware of what families go through with the terminal illness of a child, whether that child be an infant or an adult. I remember when my mother died at the age of 66. Her 90 year old mother was devastated, saying a mother should never outlive her child.

I know I'll read the second half of this book again and again. Caring and compassion, pain and grief, sharing and living... all of those are addressed in this wonderful book by a brave and loving dad. Highly recommended!!

Daddy Promise Brendan T Hoffman 9781466917415 Books Reviews

Brendan's writing is awesome, he takes you through a process that I hope no one ever has to go through, but Brendan's love for his daughter takes a journey of love and compassion and gently hands her over to God. I never knew Dawn or her sister, but I did know Brendan and some of his sisters and brothers and his dear Mother, and how he pays respect to them while dealing with this awful cancer is very touching. Brendan's command of language and usage of words is what makes this easy to read but very detailed and he paints a vivid picture of life during this journey. Dawn's faith and trust in the Lord is so strong and positive and the bond between father and daughter is brought out so vividly that Dawn was able to ease her Dad back to church and the ways of the Lord. To read how those two read scriptures to each other and challenged each other to question their faith but always proved that their faith and love for each other would get them through. I hope Brendan writes more books, he has a wonderful writing style and I think Dawn in heaven is his inspiration.
Wow!
Talk about not wanting to put a book down. I was captivated from the very first chapter. While reading this book I felt as though I was literally walking in the very shoes of Mr. Brendan T. Hoffman. The detailed writings take you through virtually every hour of every minute of every day during this 10 month battle. This book makes you feel as if you are literally standing next to the father's side during the entire timeframe from when the cancer was first diagnoised. While reading I felt so connected emotionally through the aches and pains associated with a loving father who is slowly losing his precious daughter to cancer. The pictures truly help to get a visual of this lovely young lady who courageously battled through such a long painful and horrific disease. I was deeply moved how this family took such a tragic loss of a child and turn it around for the good to help and heal others. Dawn's incredible strength and faith was infectious and penetrated the hearts and souls of so many who may have otherwise been lost. Her father did not allow this disease to take his daughter away. The cancer may have taken her physically, but through this book Mr. Hoffman's daughter still lives spiritually today in the lives of those who knew her and in the lives of those who read this book. This book is a must for everyone who either has or will one day suffer the loss of a loved one. My hat goes off to the unselfish love and commitment of Mr. Brendan Hoffman (a man who served his country faithfully for over 20 years and a man who was faithful to his family), all of the Hospice care givers, the cancer treatment facility, and the Trafford Publishing company. This book is a God-send and will certainly help and comfort many, many people going through similar losses. Recommend this book to all cancer treatment centers, HOSPICE Care facilities, and of course StarBuck's Cafe's.
Knowing Brendan since High School made this a book that I wanted to read. Knowing of the trials of losing a child that he went through and the strength that he has shown to write this book, this promise to his wonderful daughter, made this book something that I had to read.
Having been through the process of losing a loved one, the hospice work, etc. and then reading this book has made me believe that every hospice organization in the world should have a copy available to their clients and that every doctor and cancer clinic should make it available as well. It a wonderful read, very truthful and touching. The strength shown by Brendan as well as his beautiful daughter, Dawn, is truly something to behold.
The writing doesn't attempt to cover up or sugarcoat the problems that need to be faced by anyone going through this painful ordeal. It shows the true emotions and pain that this disease can inflict on a family. It also shows that with love and understanding, each individual helps the others, in some way, get through it together .
